150 Indian Students Return to Tripura Amid Bangladesh Protests
Around 150 Indian students have returned to Tripura from Bangladesh due to ongoing protests against job quotas in Bangladesh. The students arrived through the Integrated Check Post in Agartala on Saturday.
Officials Confirm the Situation
Rajeev Agnihotri, Deputy Inspector General and Sector Commander of the Border Security Force (BSF), stated that around 150 students have come back through different Integrated Check Posts (ICPs). He mentioned that the BSF is making all necessary arrangements for their return.
Vishal Kumar, District Magistrate of West Tripura, explained that the anti-reservation protests in Bangladesh have greatly affected students and citizens from neighboring countries, including India. Many Indian citizens, especially from Tripura, have been returning over the past few days.
Ministry of External Affairs Ensures Safety
External Affairs Minister (EAM) Jaishankar assured that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in Bangladesh. The MEA is coordinating with civil aviation, immigration, land ports, and BSF authorities to facilitate safe travel.
Background of the Protests
The protests in Bangladesh are driven by demands for reform in the country’s quota system for civil service jobs, which reserves positions for specific groups, including descendants of those who participated in the 1971 War of Independence against Pakistan. Bangladesh has imposed a curfew and disabled mobile internet services nationwide to curb disinformation.
