A 14-year-old boy from Kozhikode, Kerala, has made a remarkable recovery from amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and often fatal brain fever. This disease has a 97% mortality rate, and only 11 people worldwide have recovered from it.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George commended the medical team for their exceptional work in treating the boy. The child’s recovery was made possible through early detection and comprehensive treatment, including the administration of Miltefosine.

Following the report of amoebic meningoencephalitis in the state, the Health Department, under the leadership of the Minister, issued special precautionary instructions. Health workers at the Meladi Primary Health Centre suspected the boy’s symptoms and promptly informed the authorities. The child was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode after developing epilepsy.

Preventive measures were intensified, and a special meeting was held on July 5, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The meeting proposed the preparation of molecular testing systems in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Virology to confirm the disease early. On May 28, a special meeting led by the Health Minister decided to prepare treatment guidelines for amoebic encephalitis, which were released on July 20. This marks the first time comprehensive guidelines for this disease have been issued in the country.
