13-Year-Old Mia Barwick Joins Hobart Hurricanes for T20 Spring Challenge

The Hobart Hurricanes have welcomed 13-year-old Mia Barwick to their team for the T20 Spring Challenge. Barwick, a talented seam bowler, replaces Heather Graham, who joined Australia’s T20 World Cup squad after Tayla Vlaeminck’s injury. Barwick has shown her skills in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League and participated in Under-16 and Under-19 Female National Championships. She was the drinks carrier in a recent match against the Perth Scorchers and now has a chance to play in this early-season competition, which prepares players for the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

The Hurricanes expressed pride in giving a young Cricket Tasmania pathways athlete exposure to professional cricket. With top players at the T20 World Cup and WBBL overseas players yet to arrive, the T20 Spring Challenge offers young talents like Barwick and 15-year-old Caoimhe Bray of the Sydney Sixers opportunities to shine.

The Spring Challenge was created to make up for fewer games in the WBBL, now a 40-game regular season. Initially a state competition, it was restructured to align with WBBL clubs due to pressure from New South Wales and Victoria.

Australia’s T20 World Cup Performance

In the Women’s T20 World Cup, Australia became the first team to reach the semi-finals after defeating India by nine runs in Sharjah. Australia batted first, with Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath leading the score to 151/8. India’s Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma were the top bowlers. Despite a strong partnership between Deepti Sharma and Harmanpreet, India fell short by nine runs, with Annabel Sutherland and Molineux being the top bowlers for Australia.
